Chargers Rally Past Fighting Scots With Huge 2nd Half, Go to 9-1

The Carl Sandburg College men’s basketball team rallied from a halftime deficit in impressive fashion, hammering Monmouth JV 79-59 on Monday night at John M. Lewis Gymnasium.

The Chargers, among others receiving votes for the fourth straight week in Monday’s new NJCAA Division II rankings, outscored the Fighting Scots 49-25 in the second half to win their third in a row and move to 9-1 on the season.

KEY MOMENTS

  • Monmouth opened the second-half scoring with a free throw to go up 35-30 before the Chargers scored 23 of the next 25 in an 8-minute span, putting Sandburg ahead 53-37 midway through the half. Sophomore James Jones (Springfield, Ill./Lanphier) scored eight points during the stretch, all on a perfect 8-for-8 at the free-throw line. Sophomore Carter Fayhee (Macomb, Ill./Macomb) also had eight points during the run, including the go-ahead layup at 36-35 following an offensive rebound by freshman forward Cody Baer (Dunlap, Ill./Dunlap).
  • The Scots scored nine of the last 11 points in the final 4:00 of the first half to grab a 34-30 lead.

SANDBURG STANDOUT
Jones keyed the go-ahead run for the Chargers, using a pair of steals to get to the foul line for the first four points. He finished with a team-high 14 points, went 8 of 9 at the stripe, had five rebounds and collected a game-best six steals. 

OTHER TOP CHARGERS

  • Fayhee scored 12 and had a team-leading eight rebounds along with two assists and two steals.
  • Baer also had 12 points and grabbed five boards.
  • Freshman Jean Luc Wilson (East Moline, Ill./United Township) had 11 points on 5-of-7 shooting and had two of Sandburg’s 16 steals.
  • Sophomore Scott Gowan (Rockford, Ill./Rockford East) played limited minutes because of foul trouble but still reached double figures with 10 points.

FOR THE FIGHTING SCOTS

  • Briar Greenman 16 points
  • Jordan Metcalf 7 point, 11 rebounds
  • Sandburg alum Tyler Dugan had 3 points, all at the line.

Sandburg has added a game at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Eureka JV.
